For many couples, their dog is more than just a pet—they’re family. So, it’s no surprise that more and more couples are choosing to include their dog in your wedding day! As a wedding photographer, I’ve had the joy of capturing some of the sweetest moments between couples and their dogs, and while it might add a touch of extra coordination, it is absolutely worth it. If you’re thinking about including your pup in your big day, here are a few things to consider:

1. Determine Your Dog’s Role in Your Wedding

Not every dog is suited for a bustling wedding day. If your pup is social and well-behaved, there are plenty of ways to include them. Some popular roles include:

  • Ring Bearer: Secure the rings in a small pouch on their collar (just make sure someone is responsible for retrieving them!).
  • Flower Pup: A floral collar or leash can make your dog part of the aesthetic.
  • Honored Guest: If your dog isn’t up for a big entrance, they can simply be there for photos!

2. Assign a Handler

You’ll be busy on your wedding day, so designate a trusted friend, family member, or even a professional pet sitter to manage your dog. They can ensure your pup is walked, hydrated, and comfortable throughout the event. Lucky Dog in Newport offers a great service for weddings!

3. Check the Venue Rules

Before making any plans, confirm with your venue that dogs are allowed. Some venues have specific policies about pets, so you may need to get special permission or work within certain restrictions.

4. Plan for Their Comfort

Weddings can be overwhelming, especially with music, crowds, and lots of excitement. Consider your dog’s personality and create a plan that ensures their comfort:

  • Bring their favorite bed or blanket to give them a cozy spot.
  • Have water and treats on hand.
  • If your wedding has fireworks or loud music, arrange for your dog to leave before the celebration ramps up.

5. Capture the Moments

One of the best parts about including your dog in your wedding is the photos! Be sure to let your photographer know in advance so they can plan for the best lighting and moments. Some of my clients choose to include their pup in the family photos or first look. This creates a controlled environment for your pup with less stress. Whether it’s a sweet portrait with your pup or a fun candid moment, these photos will be treasures for years to come.

6. Have a Backup Plan

Even the best-behaved dogs can have an off day. If your pup gets anxious or overwhelmed, be prepared with an alternative plan, such as having them participate in just a few photos rather than the ceremony.

7. Consider a Special Outfit

If your dog is comfortable with it, a bow tie, floral collar, or a tiny tuxedo can add an extra dose of charm to their wedding look. Just be sure they’re comfortable and that nothing restricts their movement.

Final Thoughts: How to Include your Dog in Your Wedding

Including your dog in your wedding day is such a special way to celebrate your love—not just for each other but for the family you’ve built together. Yes, it might take a little extra planning, but the joy and memories they bring make it all worth it. If you’re on the fence, my advice is: go for it! You won’t regret having your four-legged best friend by your side on one of the most important days of your life.
