Tips for a Stress-Free Family Photography Session

category:

Family photos are meant to be joyful, not stressful. And 9 times out of 10, my family sessions are more chaotic and stressful than my weddings! I know how much effort goes into getting everyone dressed, out the door, and ready for photos (I’m a mom too!). Over the years I’ve learned that the most beautiful images come from families who feel relaxed, present, and able to let go of perfection. Here are a few tips for a stress-free family photography session.

1. Choose Outfits You Feel Comfortable In

Start with mom’s outfit first, and build the rest of the family’s clothing around it. Choose something that makes you feel confident and comfortable—if you’re tugging at a dress or worried about stains, it will show in the photos. Once you’ve chosen your outfit, coordinate the family’s clothes with complementary colors and textures. You do not need to match. You just want to coordinate. Pick 2-3 colors and implement those in each person’s clothing.

2. Manage Expectations

Kids will be kids. Sometimes they’re giggly, sometimes shy, and sometimes they just don’t want to sit still. That’s normal! The best sessions aren’t about “perfect behavior,” but about capturing your family as you are. Trust me—some of the sweetest images happen in the unscripted moments. And allowing things to unfold as they are leads to a stress-free family photography session for everyone!

3. Keep Snacks and Breaks Handy

A little fuel goes a long way. Pack a favorite (non-messy!) snack and water to keep little ones happy. If your child needs a quick break, that’s okay—we’ll roll with it.

4. Timing is Everything

I always recommend sessions during golden hour (just before sunset) for the dreamiest light. However, a lot of little ones do better in the morning. And honestly, that light can be just as lovely. And your kids will cooperate which means the photos will be more magical than if you drag them to a session during their normal dinner/bedtime.

5. Let Go of Perfection

The magic happens when you let go of stiff smiles and lean into connection. Hug your kids, swing them in the air, kiss your partner. When you’re focused on each other rather than the camera, the photos will feel natural and full of love. And don’t worry, I will get THE photo where everyone is looking at the camera. I promise!

6. Trust Your Photographer

You’ve already done the hard work—hired someone you trust to capture your family. Once you’re there, let me take over. I’ll guide you through poses, keep things lighthearted, and make sure everyone feels comfortable.

At the end of the day, your photos should feel like you. Years from now, you won’t remember if someone had a crooked bow or if your toddler made a silly face—you’ll remember the joy, the cuddles, and the way your family loved each other in this season of life.
