What to Wear for a Lifestyle Newborn Session

category:

One of the biggest questions families ask before their session is what to wear for a lifestyle newborn session. Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, especially during those busy newborn weeks. But it does not need to be stressful.

Lifestyle newborn photography should feel soft, natural, and connected. Your outfits should support that feeling, not distract from it. The goal is not to perfectly match. Instead, focus on coordinated colors, comfortable clothing, and pieces that feel true to your family.

Start with Soft, Neutral Colors

When deciding what to wear for a lifestyle newborn session, I always recommend sticking with neutral and pastel tones. Soft colors photograph beautifully indoors and keep the focus on your baby.

Some of my favorite colors for newborn sessions include:

  • Cream
  • Ivory
  • Light blue
  • Soft gray
  • Sage green
  • Dusty blush
  • Warm beige

Try choosing 2–3 colors and spreading them throughout everyone’s outfits. Soft textures like linen, knits, and cotton also photograph beautifully.

I recommend avoiding:

  • Neon colors
  • Bright orange or hot pink
  • Large logos or graphics
  • Busy patterns

Bright colors can reflect onto skin tones, especially during in-home sessions with natural light.

What Mom Should Wear

I always tell moms to choose their outfit first and coordinate everyone else around it. Most importantly, Mom should feel comfortable and confident.

This season of life looks different on everyone. Your body just did something incredible, and comfort matters. Choose clothing that makes you feel beautiful right now.

Long, flowy dresses photograph beautifully because they create softness and movement. Nursing-friendly dresses also work especially well during newborn sessions. If dresses are not your style, a soft sweater paired with jeans can look just as timeless.

I especially love pieces from brands like Nothing Fits But, Baltic Born, Zara, J Crew, Free People, and Jenni Kayne for newborn sessions. Their collections tend to photograph beautifully because they use soft textures, neutral tones, and relaxed silhouettes that feel elevated without looking overly formal.

A few tips for moms:

  • Stick with soft, neutral tones
  • Choose outfits you can comfortably move in
  • Avoid overly tight clothing
  • Keep patterns subtle and timeless
  • Consider dresses with sleeves if that helps you feel more comfortable postpartum

Professional hair and makeup can also go a long way during those early newborn weeks. I always recommend keeping your look classic and natural.

What Dad Should Wear

For dads, simple always works best.

Neutral button-downs, henleys, lightweight sweaters, and fitted tees photograph beautifully. Soft blues, creams, tans, and light gray tones pair especially well with newborn session palettes.

A crisp button-down with rolled sleeves creates a relaxed but polished look. If Mom wears a dress, Dad can elevate the outfit with chinos or darker denim.

Try to avoid:

  • Athletic clothing
  • Graphic tees
  • Loud patterns
  • Neon colors

Texture also photographs beautifully indoors, especially soft knits and linen fabrics.

What Should Siblings and Baby Wear?

For siblings, keep outfits simple, and coordinated with the overall color palette. Neutral dresses, henleys, knit rompers, and subtle patterns work beautifully.

One helpful rule: if Mom wears a pattern, keep the kids in solids. If Mom wears a solid outfit, siblings can wear a subtle floral or textured piece.

For baby, I almost always recommend starting with a simple white or neutral onesie. It keeps the focus on their tiny features and sleepy expressions.

Then for a second look, consider:

  • A soft swaddle
  • Knit sleepers
  • Neutral bonnets or bows
  • A meaningful heirloom outfit

If you have a special family piece passed down through generations, definitely bring it along.

Preparing for Your Session

Lifestyle newborn sessions typically take place in the comfort of your home, but I also offer studio newborn sessions for families who prefer a more minimal, curated setting. Whether we photograph your session at home or in the studio, there is no need to stress about perfection.

For in-home sessions, I recommend lightly tidying the rooms with the best natural light, usually the nursery, primary bedroom, or living room. Before the session, feed and change your baby if possible. That said, newborn sessions always include plenty of time for feeding, soothing, and breaks. Babies lead the pace here, and that is completely okay.

Most importantly, remember this: these photos are not about perfect outfits or a perfectly clean home. They are about preserving your connection and documenting this incredibly fleeting season of life.

Soft, timeless clothing simply helps keep the focus where it belongs: on your family and your newest little love.
