Family Session Advice: Embrace the Weather

When families imagine their photo session, they often picture a glowing golden sunset, clear skies, and calm breezes. And while those conditions are beautiful, it’s not always the reality for all of my sessions. I wish I could reschedule for every “perfect” weather day, but it’s just not possible. I want my clients to know that those elusive “perfect weather” days aren’t the only way to create magical photographs – they might need to embrace the weather.

The truth is—weather has a way of surprising us. I’ve photographed families in thick coastal fog, under moody storm clouds, in crisp, bright morning light, and yes, even in the kind of winds that leave your hair swirling in every direction. And you know what? Those sessions have been some of my absolute favorites.

Because here’s the secret: the magic isn’t in the weather—it’s in you.

What truly matters…

When families lean into the moment, embrace the conditions, and focus on each other, that’s when the genuine, heartfelt images happen. Snuggling closer when the breeze picks up, laughing when the kids chase the wind, or simply enjoying the quiet softness of a foggy morning—those are the little moments that shine through in photographs.

I have photographed the “D Family” from their engagement photos to their wedding day and now at least one family session per year. Last year we had scheduled a beautiful summer beach sunset session in Newport. The forecast was for thick fog. I honestly love shooting in the fog – it’s “very Newport” and gives a different vibe to the session. My client could have easily said, I don’t want to shoot in this. But I encouraged them to embrace the weather and as you can see below, they embraced it and it paid off in this beautiful gallery!

So if your session day isn’t the picture-perfect sunset you had in mind, don’t worry. Your images will still be timeless and full of life—because what matters most is the love and connection you bring to them. And often, it’s those unexpected backdrops that make your gallery feel truly one-of-a-kind.
