There’s something so timeless about an heirloom portrait — that soft vignette, the delicate lighting, and the way it captures your child exactly as they are in this fleeting moment. These traditional portraits are designed to celebrate the simple, classic beauty of childhood — from the curve of a little smile to the twinkle in their eyes – and I’d love to share my view on the magic age for heirloom portraits.
In my heirloom sessions, I photograph children in the most timeless way possible: from the shoulders up, with simple styling and soft, neutral tones. Most children wear traditional smocked clothing or a Peter Pan collar (for boys), and white or pastel colors always photograph beautifully. I also offer lifestyle add-ons to show the full outfit and capture playful moments with classic wooden toys — a sweet complement to the formal portrait.
I offer heirloom portraits for children ages 8 months through 8 years old, but parents often ask me: What’s the magic age for heirloom portraits?
While every stage of childhood is beautiful, I’ve found that ages 3–5 are truly the magic years. By this age, children begin to look more and more like the little people they’re becoming, but they still have those soft, round baby features. Most haven’t lost any teeth yet, and they can follow simple directions — which makes the experience smooth, fun, and full of natural smiles.
That said, the first year is also a favorite among parents. Capturing those tiny teeth poking through, the chubby arms, and the sweetest smiles to celebrate a first birthday is something truly special. Babies at this age are often easy to photograph and full of personality — this milestone is such a popular choice.
Every age has its own charm, but there’s a fleeting magic in that preschool window that makes these portraits especially timeless. Whether you’re celebrating a first birthday or simply preserving this stage before your little one grows another inch, an heirloom portrait is a gift you’ll treasure for generations.
