What to Wear for an Heirloom Portrait

category:

Heirloom portraits are a timeless way to capture childhood in a classic and elegant style. A lot of my clients ask me in the first or second email, “what to wear for an heirloom portrait?” Choosing the right outfit is essential to achieving that traditional, refined look that will stand the test of time. Here’s a guide to dressing your little one for their heirloom portrait session.

Helpful Tips for Your Session

  • I suggest getting kids dressed when you arrive at the studio to keep outfits fresh and clean.
  • I will have wipes available for any crumbs or last-minute touch-ups.
  • I have a client closet with a few clothing pieces available for borrowing. These range in size from 12 months to 6T, with more options for girls’ dresses than boys’ outfits. Message me if you are interested in learning more about my current client closet.

Colors to choose for an Heirloom Outfit

I suggest whites, pale pinks, and pale blues for colors, as they create a soft, classic look that photographs beautifully. Patterns are ok – I’ve had people choose a toile dress, but I would keep it minimal.

What to Wear for an Heirloom Portrait: BOYS

For boys, traditional heirloom attire often includes:

  • Smocked or button-on outfits – These provide a classic and polished look. I love to see their little leg and arm rolls in these outfits too.
  • Jon Jons or shortalls – Perfect for younger boys, often worn with a Peter Pan collar shirt underneath.
  • Collared shirts with simple detailing – A soft, neutral or pastel tone works best.
  • For older boys, I recommend a collared shirt rather than a Peter Pan collar for a more mature look.

What to Wear for an Heirloom Portrait: GIRLS

For girls, heirloom portraits often feature:

  • Smocked dresses – These timeless pieces often feature delicate embroidery with a collar. I like short sleeve options to show some skin in the portrait.
  • Lace or hand-embroidered details – These add a beautiful touch of vintage charm and you can find some beautiful pieces on Etsy that are hand made down south.

Shoes and Accessories

  • Shoes: Classic white, ivory, or soft leather shoes work best. Mary Janes or lace-up leather baby shoes are great options.
  • Socks: Knee-high socks or ankle socks with lace trim complement the heirloom aesthetic.
  • Bows: For girls, a simple, well-proportioned bow in a soft or pastel shade adds a perfect finishing touch. I think the brand: Wee-ones – makes the most classic bows that stay in girls hair.
  • Barefoot Option: If you opt out of shoes, barefoot is so sweet for little kids and adds a natural, timeless feel.

Where to Shop for Heirloom Outfits

For high-quality heirloom attire, I recommend the following stores:

  • Feltman Brothers – A go-to for vintage-inspired children’s clothing, these pieces are timeless.
  • Cecil and Lou – Beautiful smocked outfits and classic designs, this store offers some more afforadable options.
  • Strasburg Children – Exquisite hand-sewn pieces with fine details.
  • Classic Whimsy – Elegant, timeless designs perfect for portraits.
  • Little English – Classic children’s clothing with high quality fabrics, beautiful smocking and hand embroidery.
  • Etsy – A great place to find unique, handmade heirloom pieces.

Final Thoughts

What to Wear for an Heirloom Portrait

When selecting an outfit, focus on classic silhouettes, soft colors, and timeless fabrics. Avoid bold patterns or trendy designs that may date the portrait over time. The goal is to create an image that feels elegant and enduring—one that you’ll treasure for generations to come!
