Like many military families, the L family made a one year stop in Newport for training at the Naval War College before heading to the next assignment overseas. They wanted a Newport family photo session to capture their memories in this special city by the sea. Castle Hill Lighthouse was the perfect backdrop for their family.
One of the reasons I love Castle Hill Lighthouse is the variety in one little spot. Usually an hour before sunset the light is golden and perfect in the grassy area above the lighthouse. It’s a great open space for kids to run around and get the crazies out before heading down to the rocky edge of the lighthouse. We spent quite a bit of time here with Jackson + Ben running, playing hide and seek and blowing bubbles. The light was so soft and golden. It really was just so gorgeous with the tall yellow grass and the family’s neutral color palette. One of my favorite Newport family photo session locations!
Once we got some wiggles out, we walked over to the Castle Hill Lighthouse. It’s pretty rocky and can be steep in certain spots for little kids. Holding hands is key. We try to limit our time on the rocks and focus on more posed, sitting portraits here. It can also be pretty windy at this location, so making sure mom’s hair stays in tact for a bit is important. Typically our timing coincides with sunset and we certainly caught some nice light despite the winds that night!
Already itching to get back to this spot with 2020 families when Covid-19 restrictions lift a bit. Hopefully just in time for summer Newport family photo sessions!
