New England weather keeps us on our toes, and that’s exactly what made Liv and Rich’s Newport RI engagement session at Sachuest Point and Third Beach so special. Fog rolled in just before we started, wrapping the coastline in a soft, muted glow. We could have rescheduled, but we didn’t. Instead, we embraced it and that choice gave us a session full of movement, emotion, and unexpected magic.
That classic coastal mist completely transformed the beach. The horizon disappeared. The ocean blended into the sky. I didn’t have to fight harsh sunlight or deep shadows, just soft, diffused light that made every image feel romantic.
Liv and Rich stood out beautifully against the misty backdrop. The fog simplified everything. No distractions, no busy background, just the two of them, fully present. That’s what I always aim for.
Liv and Rich chose a palette of white, light blue, and cream, and it couldn’t have worked better. Those tones echoed the soft sky and blended seamlessly with the sandy shoreline. The sea grass looked lush and green, and pops of pink sea roses added just enough color near the dunes.
Liv layered on a pearled denim jacket with her soon-to-be married surname, which brought in personality without overpowering the look. It felt fun, relaxed, and completely her.
The weather also shaped the styling in the best way. The humidity and sea breeze gave her hair natural movement. Instead of fighting it, she leaned in, tossing it into a loose, casual bun by the end of the session. The result felt effortlessly authentic, exactly what photographs best.
Midway through the session, Liv and Rich changed into a more casual second look. Liv stayed in soft blues and whites, while Rich paired jeans with a relaxed top. The shift gave us a new playful, easy energy.
They popped champagne right on the beach, laughing as the fog settled around them. No stress about the weather. No second guessing. Just enjoying the moment together.
If your forecast doesn’t look perfect, don’t panic. You have more control than you think. Here’s how I guide my couples:
1. Trust the light
Overcast skies create soft, even light. Your skin looks smoother, and I don’t have to battle harsh shadows. It’s one of the most flattering conditions you can get.
2. Choose the right colors
Stick with neutrals and soft tones: white, cream, light blue, and muted pastels. These colors work beautifully in fog and overcast light. They also keep the focus on you.
3. Work with your hair, not against it
Humidity, wind and salty air will do their thing. Plan for it. Loose waves, braids, or a low bun all hold up better and feel more natural in coastal conditions.
4. Lean into layers
A denim jacket, sweater, or light layer adds texture and gives you options during the session. Liv’s jacket added personality and made the whole look feel complete.
5. Stay present
The biggest thing? Let go of expectations. When you stop worrying about the weather, you start enjoying the experience. That’s when the best photos happen.
We live in New England. The weather changes constantly, and waiting for a “perfect” day can mean missing out on something even better. Fog, wind, and overcast skies don’t have to take away from your session, they can add to it. When you’re near the water, those elements create movement, texture, and atmosphere you simply can’t replicate. I see it all the time, like during this dreamy sailing engagement session in Newport, RI, where the coastal conditions added an entirely different kind of magic
Liv and Rich didn’t chase sunshine. They trusted the process, leaned into the moment, and walked away with images that feel honest, joyful, and completely their own. And that’s always the goal.
