Wedding Portraits with Pets

How to Include Your Four-Legged Friend on Your Big Day

For many couples, pets aren’t just pets — they’re family. They’ve been there through many “firsts”, long walks, quiet mornings, and everything in between. So it’s no surprise that more and more couples are choosing to include their dogs (and sometimes cats!) in their wedding portraits.

As a New England wedding photographer who values authenticity, family, and timeless images, I absolutely love when couples incorporate wedding portraits with pets. When done thoughtfully, portraits with pets add heart, personality, and a layer of meaning that makes your images feel even more you.

Why Include Your Pet in Wedding Portraits?

Pets are a huge part of daily life — and your wedding day is a celebration of the life you’re building together. Including them in portraits can:

  • Honor your family as it exists right now
  • Create relaxed, joyful moments (especially if nerves are high)
  • Add a personal, sentimental element to your gallery
  • Result in images you’ll treasure for decades

When to Schedule Wedding Portraits with Pets

Timing is everything when it comes to photographing pets on a wedding day.

The most seamless option:

  • Schedule pet portraits before the ceremony, often during first look portraits is best.

This allows:

  • Your pet to be involved without the chaos of cocktail hour
  • Flexibility if your pet needs breaks
  • Time for genuine, unrushed moments

If your venue allows pets only outdoors or for a limited window, we’ll plan intentionally around those restrictions.

Assign a Pet Handler (This Is Key)

One of the biggest tips I can offer: designate a trusted pet handler.

This should be someone who:

  • Knows your pet well
  • Isn’t in the wedding party
  • Can step in for treats, walks, cleanup, and quick exits

This ensures you can stay present while your pet is cared for — and it makes portraits smoother, calmer, and more enjoyable for everyone.

What to Bring for Pet-Friendly Wedding Portraits

A little preparation goes a long way. I recommend having:

  • High-value treats (nothing too messy)
  • A neutral leash (leather or simple rope photographs beautifully)
  • Water + bowl
  • Grooming wipes or towel
  • Any accessories you love — floral collars, bandanas, or bow ties (optional!)

If you’re unsure about accessories, classic and minimal always stands the test of time.

Keeping Portraits Natural & Timeless

Some of the best pet portraits happen when we don’t force perfection.

I focus on:

  • Letting your pet interact naturally
  • Capturing movement, connection, and emotion
  • Giving space for candid moments alongside a few gently guided portraits

Whether your dog sits perfectly or decides to steal the spotlight, the goal is images that feel joyful, relaxed, and true.

Are Wedding Portraits with Pets Worth It?

Every time a couple includes their pet, the answer is a resounding yes.

These images often become favorites — the ones framed in your home, shared with family, and smiled over years later. They tell a fuller story of your relationship and the season of life you’re in! It can certainly include some extra logistics, but in the end, you’ll be glad you had wedding portraits with your pets!
